JEE Main 2027 Registration Relief: NTA Permits NRI Candidates to Use Passports as Identity Proof

JEE Main 2027 Registration Relief: NTA Permits NRI Candidates to Use Passports as Identity Proof

NEW DELHI — In a major relief for overseas engineering aspirants, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially allowed Non-Resident Indian (NRI) candidates to use their passports as valid identity proof to register for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2027 Session I.

The decision addresses long-standing registration hurdles faced by Indian students residing abroad who do not possess domestic identification documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, or Indian driving licenses.

Clarification via Social Media Response

The testing body issued the clarification on its official X (formerly Twitter) account after receiving numerous queries from NRI candidates regarding verification roadblocks. One candidate explicitly asked how NRI applicants could proceed with their registration if they lacked standard Indian IDs.

Responding to the query, NTA confirmed: "You can now use passport to complete the application process."

Prior to this update, candidates primarily relied on DigiLocker, Aadhaar re-KYC, PAN, or driving licenses to authenticate their profiles during the portal sign-up, which often created roadblocks for students completed their schooling overseas.

Key Deadlines & Application Highlights

The online registration window for JEE Main 2027 Session I opened on October 24. NRI candidates and prospective applicants can review the revised schedule below:

Event / Action Deadline
Application Submission Window (No Late Fee) Until November 22, 2026 (11:50 PM)
Fresh Application Window (With Late Fee) November 23 – November 26, 2026
Application Correction Facility November 27 – November 29, 2026

NTA noted that candidates submitting a fresh application will receive a new application number. However, fees paid for any earlier abandoned applications will neither be refunded nor adjusted against the fresh submission. Candidates who only need to fix discrepancies in existing applications are advised to wait for the dedicated correction window opening on November 27.
