NTR varsity puts off counselling

VIJAYAWADA : Counselling for admissions to post-graduation and diploma courses in various universities and colleges in the state have been postponed from April 25 to 28. Dr NTR University of Health Sciences on Monday announced that the counselling would begin on April 28 at 9 am as the university is seeking clarification from the High Court following a writ petition filed by a student on conducting the counselling.

The university has not taken a decision on the procedure to be followed over local and non-local quota. Students attending the counselling from Andhra region opposed the filling of local quota first. The local quota is 85 per cent. If the local quota is filled first, the local candidates will get the first chance to join prestigious and prominent universities in the state. As a result, the non-local quota merit students will get a raw deal because they will lose an opportunity to choose prestigious institutions.

On the other hand, stu dents hailing from Telangana region have demanded that the university immediately conduct the counselling on Monday as per the schedule. They recalled that the High Court had issued orders last year that local quota should be filled first and non-local quota later.

In the previous year, the university could not implement the orders. However, this year the university has not taken a decision on implementing the orders.

Interestingly, a top ranking student filed another writ petition in the High Court on Monday asking for a change in the rule. He alleged that non-local merit candidates would suffer if the non-local quota is filled later. Keeping in view the fragile situation, the university postponed the counselling to April 28.

Students hailing from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema are asking both local and non-local quota to be filled simultaneously so that merit candidates belonging to local and nonlocal categories will get an opportunity to join best institutions.
