Police hunts for Eamcet proxies

HYDERABAD : About 12,200 students who have been repeatedly appearing for the Eamcet medical examination since 2005 have come under the scanner as officials suspect foul play in the wake of large-scale irregularities in the medical stream exam last year.

It was found that the repeaters were making a killing by allowing others to copy from them, appearing on behalf of others for the exam and trying to leak the papers after collecting huge amounts from students and coaching centres.

Eamcet officials have submitted a list of these students to the intelligence department to ascertain their credentials. They also suspect that some of the repeaters are “medicos“ who are already into MBBS, since many opted for centres with medical colleges located nearby.

Eamcet officials have now decided to fingerprint and photograph all Eamcet medical applicants this year as they fear “impersonation“. Besides this, plans are afoot to instal jammers in sensitive centres to check hi-tech copying using Bluetooth mobile technology that was witnessed in some centres. The Eamcet officials were forced to approach the police for help since about 60 per cent of the phone numbers given by the repeaters were fake.

They were also surprised that 144 candidates who had cleared the IPE in 2005 had applied for the medical exam this year. Officials conducting the Eamcet medical exam this year suspect foul play as it was found that many candidates who had given the exam were repeaters, who were involved in many other malpractices.

“We have already submitted the details of repeaters to the police department and the intelligence department. The director general of police has directed police officials in respective districts to thoroughly investigate the issue,“ said Prof.M.V. Ramana Rao, convener of Eamcet.

The professor added that the measures were not meant to harass “genuine repeaters“ but to check mal practices in Eamcet. This year, nearly 70,000 students applied for the Eamcet medical exam, 15,000 more than last year. Also, 343 students of 2006 batch, 674 of 2007 batch, 1,384 of 2008 batch, 2,512 of 2009 batch and 7,190 of 2010 batch applied for the same.

“We have doubts about students who cleared their Inter exams between 2005 and 2008 because these students would have finished their MBBS course by now or would have completed a major part of the course.
The repetition by 2009 and 2010 students can be understood as it is not possible for many students to secure MBBS seats in just one or two attempts due to shortage of seats in the state,“ Mr Rao said.
