Private teachers too face salary cuts

Managements of schools and colleges refuse to pay for the ‘closure' days

It's not just the government employees who have gone without pay for the strike period so far, several teachers in the private sector are facing an imminent pay cut as some schools and colleges have refused to pay for the ‘closure' days.

Helpless situation

Thousands of teachers in city schools, junior colleges and professional colleges in and around the city are yet to get their salaries this month. Some school and college managements have already made it clear to their employees that they will not be able to pay for the days the institutions were closed. Teachers are angry and helpless but they can do little. “While top schools have not made it an issue middle level and small schools have decided to cut the salaries as the schools did not function,” a teacher in a private school in Habsiguda said.

It is no secret that most of these schools solely depend on the fees paid by the students, which is comparatively meagre. Teachers and other staff in these schools are under contract and get paid only for the days on which they work. “We are helpless and we are more worried with no end to strike in the sight,” says Ravinder, a teacher in a private school in Uppal.

Principal of a junior college in the corporate sector, however, said they are paying full month salary to all their employees though the colleges were closed for more than 15 days. “Our lecturers and other staff work hard and it's our duty to pay them on time though colleges were closed for long time,” said P. Narayana, chairman of Narayana group of institutions. But small colleges, however, are not that financially healthy. In most of these colleges students pay their fee irregularly and given the circumstances they can't even be forced to pay.

No cash flow

Some engineering colleges, which are already suffering financially with vacant seats, too are asking their staff to take 15 days' salary and promising to adjust the remaining in the days to come. “The problem is we are not sure how long this will continue. We put in our personal money as it will take several months before the fee reimbursement reaches us,” says the correspondent of a college. “Our other businesses are badly hit due to the strike and there is no cash flow to adjust salaries.”
