Toppers’ Tips: ‘Notes prepared for CBSE board exams helped in CUET UG

CUET UG Toppers' Tips: The CUET topper, now in DU's Hindu College, says that after the implementation of NEP, they are having to study seven subjects per semester instead of four subjects.

CUET UG 2024: Jaya Jha appeared for CUET in its debut edition in 2022. She topped the exam with 800/800 marks. Jha appeared for four papers in CUET UG – political science, history, English and psychology.

She scored an overall pass percentage of 95 per cent in Class 10 and 99.5 per cent in Class 12. Currently, pursuing BA (Hons) Political Science from Hindu College at Delhi University, the topper shares how she prepared for the CUET UG.

My CUET experience

I did not get myself registered for any coaching. I started my CUET preparation before my board exams began. The first term exams of Class 12 were already in an MCQ format and it proved to be advantageous. I prepared detailed notes for all four subjects chapter-wise. I also made sure none of the ‘boxes’ and ‘timelines’ were left out from the NCERT chapters. Boxes and timelines are given in the end of all chapters in the NCERT books and contain key concepts and information.

It was a bit difficult to prepare for CUET and CBSE exams simultaneously. The CUET was completely in the MCQ format whereas the CBSE Class 12 second term exam was a subjective format.

I had to prepare two different kinds of notes – one MCQ and the other subjective. However, the information and the things I learnt for the subjective paper were utilised in the MCQ format as well.

Why did I choose Hindu College?

I chose Hindu College because it is one of the best colleges in India as per many rankings. I have heard about its infrastructure and the amount of opportunities it offers to a political science graduate.

While filling the CUET application form, Hindu College was my first preference. My second and third preferences were Miranda House and Lady Shri Ram College for Political Science (hons). Apart from these, I also filled BA programme (history + political science) in St Stephens College, Hindu College and Miranda House.

I am part of the Hindu College Parliament Symposium Society. It is a policy and deliberation society and organises parliamentary election events every year. I am also part of TedEx Hindu College and also recently joined the office of international programmes in the college.

Advise for CUET UG aspirants

– Be consistent with the preparation

– Share knowledge. Nobody alone can complete everything. If you have someone you can trust and you think you could do it together, go for it

– Do not think any topic is too small and leave out

– Focus on the boxes and timelines of the NCERT textbook

– Make NCERT a bible

– If a question is tricky, leave that and go to another question

My passion is reading. I love reading fiction but I think after college started, it stopped because we had to complete the first year in just six to seven months. Due to the implementation of NEP, we have now seven subjects instead of four subjects and just three months to complete them. It got a little overwhelming and therefore, I had to put my reading habit on pause.
