Vignan University revamps B.Tech course curriculum

GUNTUR: Students of Vignan University will have advantages of multi-disciplinary learning as the university has revamped the B. Tech course curriculum by introducing minor courses designed to widen the scope of employment, according to Vice-Chancellor V. Govardhana Rao.

Students admitted into any of the engineering streams will have the option of studying minor courses in Information Technology, Management, Humanities, and ECE.

The university has also introduced industry-specific courses such as Open Systems for Web Technologies (6th semester), Introduction to Main Frames (7th semester), and Business Intelligence (8th semester), says Dr. Rao. The MoUs signed with foreign universities to offer twinning programmes at UG and PG level have broadened the scope for further advanced students and faculty exchange. New courses in Textile Engineering, Automobile Engineering, and a few industry supported PG programmes are being introduced from 2011.

The tie-ups with leading software firms such as IBM, Microsoft, Infosys, and Southerland Global Services (English Language Lab) have led to establishment of these centres on campus. In yet another new initiative, the university is introducing a summer semester during which students can clear the backlog courses, according to Dr. Govardhana Rao.

New initiative

The new initiative provides an opportunity for students to repeat the course under faculty guidance. The university has recruited faculty members from IITs and has inducted 20 IITians from Chennai, Khargpur, Mumbai, and Kanpur in 2011. A comprehensively designed training programme covers aptitude, personality development and communication skills besides other soft skills, which has resulted in 70-80 per cent of students getting placed in reputed firms.
