Career in Aeronautical Engineering

Eligibility | Entrance Exams | Colleges | Career

Aeronautical Engineering is a broad subject that dives into the design, development, operation and study of aviation and space vehicles. It deals with the research of the new technologies and development in the field of aeronautics, space and defence systems. There are two segments in Aeronautical engineering - Aeronautical Engineering which work with aircraft that stay within the earth's atmosphere such as aeroplanes and helicopters, and Astronautical engineering that work with aircraft that operate outside of the earth's atmosphere such as rockets, satellites, and other and spacecraft. A degree in Aeronautical engineering covers them both.

Career Prospect

A career in Aeronautical Engineering is diversified into different positions, such as Consultants, Thermal Design Engineers, Mechanical Design Engineers, Aeronautical Technologist, Aircraft Production Manager, Assistant Technical Officers, Aeronautical Design Engineer and Graduate Engineer Trainees. An Aeronautical Engineer can work in private or public organizations. Aeronautical Engineering graduates are recruited by many aeronautical companies both in India and abroad.

As an Aeronautical Engineer, it is important to choose between options – whether to focus on Aeronautical Engineering or Astronautical Engineering. Both branches have great opportunities for employment. Aeronautical engineers now spend more of their time in an office environment than they have in the past because modern aircraft design requires the use of sophisticated computer equipment and software design tools, modelling, and simulations for tests, evaluation, and training.

Growth Prospect

Aeronautical Engineering is an advanced subject and requires high expertise. As it is a skill-based field, there is a number of opportunities for skilled professionals. Numerous Aeronautical engineering jobs are available in Airlines, Air Force, Corporate Research Companies, Defense Ministry, Helicopter Companies, Aviation Companies, NASA and many others.

Some of the Top organisations which provide aeronautical engineering jobs in India are:

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)
  • Defense Research and Development Laboratories (DRDO)
  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)
  • Ministry of Civil Aviation
  • Air India
  • Pawan Hans
  • Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL)

Average Pay for an Aeronautical Engineer

An Aeronautical Engineer gets an average compensation of Rs 621,657 PA. Pay for this career increases accordingly for more experienced employees, and goes down altogether for those employees with over 20 years service. The average compensation of an Aeronautical Engineer is INR 35,000 to INR 40,000 every month. The highest pay offered to an Aeronautical Engineering fresher from IITs is INR 15 Lakhs for per annum. The hike in compensation is in respect to the employer, current position and one's experience.  In the government sector, the pay hike is slow-paced. But, in a private sector, an Aeronautical engineer might be offered with better positions through which pay might be higher.

Eligibility

Several technological universities including the IITs offer courses in Aeronautical Engineering both at undergraduate and post-graduate level, In India.

  • The basic eligibility for BE / B.Tech program is 10+2 Science (Physics, Chemistry and Maths) with a fairly high percentage of marks in the aggregate.
  • One must pass the qualifying exam i.e. IIT JEE for admission into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
  • For M.Tech program in aeronautical engineering, one should have completed a degree in (BE/B.Tech) aeronautical engineering or any other equivalent branches of engineering.
