British Council develops application for teachers

Mobile phones will no longer remain mere communication devices for teachers. In fact, they will now assist teachers in conducting English language classes more efficiently and make learning more interesting for their students.British Council is developing new mobile applications for English teachers to help them keep track of the latest teaching tools. These applications are being developed particularly for teachers in India and will be launched this year across the country, said Rob Lynes, Director, British Council.

This will be more helpful to teachers in rural areas, who do not have access to internet. Using these apps, the teachers can improve their teaching standard, besides learning new teaching methods.

“We are partnering with a Chennai-based private company to develop these applications. Lot of research is being done on the content and steps are being taken to make it simple and more effective,” says Mr. Lynes.

Teachers will not require smart phones to download and use these applications. They can also be operated on regular phones that are equipped with multimedia features and can play audio-video clips, explains Alison Barrett, Head English Partnerships, India.

Teachers, who download these applications, will get a one-minute audio-video clip that will contain different topics everyday. Right from tips to new vocabulary, conducting interactive sessions with students, there will be lot of resource material, she says.

Apart from mobile applications, British Council is also developing “TER: India – Teaching English Radio for India” specialised radio programmes for teachers. These programmes will be aired on public sector radio stations and contain lot of resource material that can help teachers in different ways, says Ms. Barrett.

“Initially, these programmes will be launched in Assam, Bihar and Maharashtra and will later be expanded to other parts of the country,” adds Barrett.Application to help English teachers keep track of latest teaching toolsCan also be operated on regular phones, not just smart phones
