GMAT 2026 Syllabus

GMAT 2026 Syllabus

The GMAT 2026 syllabus is meticulously designed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) to evaluate the core analytical data literacy, quantitative reasoning, and verbal skills critical for success at leading international business schools.

The exam consists of exactly three equally weighted sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA/Essay) and Sentence Correction (Grammar) have been permanently removed from the test. The exam is entirely multiple-choice and features a computer-adaptive format with an absolute duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes (plus one optional 10-minute break).

The following is a comprehensive breakdown of the latest GMAT syllabus and what aspirants can expect.

  1. Quantitative Reasoning
  • Overview: Measures baseline numerical literacy, algebraic logic, and mathematical problem-solving skills. Physical or on-screen calculators are strictly prohibited in this section.
  • Timing: 45 minutes
  • Number of Questions: 21 Questions
  • Core Format: Composed strictly of Problem Solving style questions. (Note: Data Sufficiency has been moved entirely to the Data Insights section, and Geometry has been completely removed from the test).

Major Content Domains:

  • Arithmetic: Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, number properties, powers, roots, and basic descriptive statistics (averages, medians).
  • Algebra: Linear equations, quadratic equations, algebraic expressions, inequalities, absolute values, basic functions, exponents, sequences, and series.
  • Applied Word Problems: Rate-time-distance, work/pipes/cisterns, mixtures, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, basic counting methods (permutations/combinations), and elementary probability.
  1. Verbal Reasoning
  • Overview: Evaluates reading comprehension, logical argument structural analysis, and information synthesis. This section strictly tests critical thinking and close reading rather than memorized rules of English grammar.
  • Timing: 45 minutes
  • Number of Questions: 23 Questions

Major Content Domains:

  • Reading Comprehension (RC): Analyzing passages (up to 350 words) based on business, social sciences, or physical science topics. Measures ability to extract main ideas, identify supporting points, draw logical inferences, apply information to parallel scenarios, map text structure, and decode authorial tone.
  • Critical Reasoning (CR): Evaluating short text stimuli (typically under 100 words) presenting a specific argument. Measures ability to strengthen or weaken arguments, isolate hidden assumptions, evaluate action plans, identify reasoning flaws, and derive valid logical conclusions.
  1. Data Insights (Integrated Reasoning)
  • Overview: Evaluates digital and data literacy by assessing a candidate's capacity to interpret, translate, and synthesize multiple sources of information to solve real-world management problems. An on-screen calculator is fully permitted and integrated exclusively during this section.
  • Timing: 45 minutes
  • Number of Questions: 20 Questions

Core Question Formats:

  • Data Sufficiency (DS): Assessing mathematical or real-world logic scenarios to determine if the given data points are sufficient to answer a problem without executing unnecessary calculations.
  • Multi-Source Reasoning (MSR): Analyzing data spread across multiple interactive tabs containing text passages, data tables, graphics, or a combination of all three to isolate discrepancies or draw conclusions.
  • Table Analysis: Sorting and analyzing interactive data spreadsheets to determine trends or verify specified conditions.
  • Graphics Interpretation: Reading and interpreting visual data maps, including scatter plots, coordinate charts, bar graphs, and pie curves to discern key patterns or relationships.
  • Two-Part Analysis: Solving complex problems that involve dual structural dependencies; these can be purely quantitative, verbal, or a hybrid mix of both.

GMA FAQs:

Q1. What are the main sections of the GMAT 2026 exam?

Ans. The GMAT 2026 comprises Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) is omitted in the Focus Edition but may appear in some versions or as per individual school requirements.

Q2. Has the syllabus changed from previous editions?

Ans. Yes. The GMAT Focus Edition has streamlined the exam into three sections, removing AWA and Sentence Correction, and added Data Insights as an expanded, modernized version of Integrated Reasoning.

Q3. What mathematical topics should candidates focus on for the Quantitative section?

Ans. Candidates should prepare arithmetic (fractions, percentages, ratios), algebra (equations, inequalities), word problems, and basic concepts of probability and data sufficiency.

Q4. What does the Data Insights section test?

Ans. Data Insights evaluates the ability to interpret data from various sources and formats, synthesize information, and make business-oriented decisions using tables, charts, and complex data sets.

Q5. Is essay writing still part of the GMAT 2026?

Ans. No, the Analytical Writing Assessment is not included in the GMAT Focus Edition. However, some MBA programs may still require evidence of writing skills, so candidates should check their target schools' policies.
