The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), functioning under the Department of Space, Government of India, offers premier undergraduate programs in Aerospace Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics), and a Dual Degree program. Rather than hosting a separate entrance test, IIST admissions are strictly based on the performance and rank secured in the JEE Advanced exam. For the 2026 academic cycle, the JEE Advanced exam was conducted on May 17, 2026, with results out on June 1, 2026. Following this, the online registration window on the dedicated IIST admission portal remained active from May 26 to June 17, 2026, driving the subsequent seat allocation phase through June and July.

IIST conducts an extensive 10-round online seat allocation sequence, followed by dynamic spot admissions to completely fill specialized vacancies.

 The Seat Allocation & Process of Counselling

Unlike standard engineering colleges, IIST does not participate in JoSAA or CSAB counselling. Candidates must track the standalone portal independently using these sequential phases

1.Online Registration

Log in to the official IIST admission portal. Input your JEE Advanced registration credentials, upload essential preliminary documents, and pay the mandatory processing fee.

2.Rank List Generation

IIST compiles and publishes its own distinct admission rank list derived entirely from the JEE Advanced scores of registered applicants.

3.Choice Filling & Freezing

Select your target branches (e.g., Aerospace, Avionics, Dual Degree) and order them based on your exact priority. Lock your choices securely; un-frozen selections lock automatically on the deadline day.

4.Seat Allotment & Options

Check the portal during allotment drops. If a seat is allocated, choose your next trajectory.

5.Fee Payment & Document Verification

To preserve your allocated seat, pay the seat acceptance fee instantly online and upload clean digital scans of required certificates for remote checking.

6.Final Campus Reporting

Report physically to the IIST campus at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on your assigned onboarding date. Present your physical documents for cross-verification to secure your final admission. 

Counselling Application & Seat Fees

• Registration Fee (Non-Refundable):
• Male Candidates (General / EWS / OBC-NCL): Rs.600
• Female & Reserved Candidates (SC / ST / PwD): Rs.300
• Seat Acceptance Fee: Upon receiving a seat offer in any round, you must pay a confirmation fee (typically around Rs.20,000 for general categories) which is later accounted for in your first-semester tuition fee.

Q1: Can I get admission into IIST through my JEE Main rank?

A: No. Admission to the undergraduate B.Tech and Dual Degree tracks at IIST is strictly based on your rank in the JEE Advanced exam. JEE Main scores only act as the filtering qualifier to take the JEE Advanced exam.

Q2: Is IIST a part of the JoSAA seat allocation process?

A: No, IIST is completely independent of JoSAA. Even if you are participating in JoSAA for IITs/NITs, you must register separately on the IIST portal to be considered for space science programs.

Q3: What is the benefit of the 5-year Dual Degree program at IIST?

A: The Dual Degree program leads to a B.Tech in Engineering Physics alongside a Master of Science or M.Tech degree. It provides a comprehensive track for students aiming directly at advanced research roles.

Q4: Does IIST offer direct absorption options into ISRO?

A: Yes, but it is purely performance-linked. Eligible students who maintain a high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) above a specific threshold (traditionally 7.5 or higher, subject to vacancy counts) are considered for direct absorption as Scientists/Engineers into various Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centers.

Q5: What happens if I miss the seat acceptance fee deadline for my allocated seat?

A: Failing to pay the seat acceptance fee within the designated timeframe for a round results in immediate forfeiture of the allocated seat. You will also be automatically removed from the subsequent allocation lists.
