An Act enacted by the parliament founded the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University. The University was established on January 10, 1996, by the Department of Education, Ministry of HRD, Government of India. Located in Vidya Vihar, Lucknow, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) is a central university. It has received approval from MHRD and UGC and NAAC accreditation ('Grade A'). By NIRF, 2023, the university is ranked 69^th  overall in the category.

In the fields of humanities and sciences, engineering, agriculture, biotechnology, business, law, education, and environmental sciences, it provides the kind of education required through a variety of inclusive, society-oriented programs for transforming our nation.
