Himachal Pradesh University was established on 22nd July 1970 by an Act of the Legislative Assembly of Himachal Pradesh, addressing the needs and aspirations of the Union Territory, which achieved full statehood on 25th January 1971. It is the only multi-faculty residential and affiliating university in the state, offering higher education to urban, rural, and tribal areas through formal and distance learning modes.
The Department of Laws was founded in 1970 alongside the university's establishment. It was relocated to the university campus in 1984 and moved to its building in 1993. The department offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in law, including LLB, LLM, and PhD programs. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to providing legal education, training, and research, benefiting students pursuing careers in law. It has a distinguished record of producing top professionals, statesmen, and officers who contribute significantly to the nation.

Computer Lab- To meet the growing challenge of internet usage and e-learning, the department supports students in research and next-generation e-learning. The establishment of a computer lab with round-the-clock internet access is planned. This lab will be equipped to collaborate with leading academic stakeholders of next-generation internet, such as Manupatra, Lexis Nexis, and Westlaw.
Moot Court Room: Teaching theoretical law without exposing students to its practical application is less useful, especially for those intending to practice law after completing their LL.B course.
Conference Hall- The department takes pride in its Conference Hall, which is well-furnished with state-of-the-art facilities and has a seating capacity of approximately 200.
Library- Two floors of the building are dedicated to the departmental library. One floor serves as a reading room with a seating capacity of over 100 students. The departmental library boasts 13,754 books and subscribes to 15 national and international law journals.
Canteen- The canteen at Himachal University (Faculty of Law) offers hygienic food and beverages to students and faculty members. With reasonable prices and a wide variety of food, the canteen is a favourite spot for students.
