Jnanadabhiram Barooah Law College, also referred to as J.B. Law College (JBLC), was established in 1969 with the goal of promoting legal education throughout the northeastern region. A major contributor to the college's founding was the eminent educationalist Late Golap Chandra Choudhury, who served as its first principal from 1969 until 1972. 

As of currently, it provides LL.M., BA LLB Hons., LLB, and LLB Hons. Admission to the relevant courses depends upon a student's ability to be chosen on the basis of merit through an admissions test and interview, which takes place on campus on time. The college is affiliated with AICTE and has a rating of "B" from the NAAC. It is approved by the University Grants Commission and the Bar Council of India and has a permanent affiliation with Gauhati University.
