K. J. Somaiya College of Education (KJSCE), a constituent unit of Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Mumbai, is a premier institution for teacher education. Being an autonomous institution under a private university, its admission process and cut-offs differ from the centralized state process (CAP) followed by other B.Ed. colleges in Maharashtra. The cut-offs are determined by the university's internal entrance examination (PERA CET or Somaiya Entrance Test) and the academic merit of the applicants.
Admissions to the B.Ed., M.Ed., and P.G. Diploma programs at KJSCE are merit-based, following a holistic evaluation of the candidate’s profile.
Undergraduate (B.Ed.):
Entrance Exam: Candidates must appear for the Somaiya Entrance Test (SET) or have a valid score in the MAH B.Ed. CET or PERA CET.
Academic Eligibility: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories). For candidates with a background in Engineering, Technology, or Management, a minimum of 55% marks is required.
Personal Interview: Shortlisted candidates must undergo a Personal Interview (PI) round, which evaluates their communication skills, passion for teaching, and general awareness.
Postgraduate (M.Ed.):
Admission is based on the marks obtained in the B.Ed. degree and performance in the university-level entrance interview.
Minority Quota: As a Gujarati Linguistic Minority institution, a significant portion of seats (50%) is reserved for students from the Gujarati-speaking community, subject to university eligibility norms.
Since KJSCE is part of a private university, it does not release "ranks" in the same manner as the state-level CAP rounds. Instead, it operates on a Merit Score system that combines entrance exam performance and academic history.
Note: The cut-off for the B.Ed. program is typically higher for candidates from the Commerce and Science streams compared to the Arts stream due to the volume of applicants.
The selection process at K. J. Somaiya College of Education shows distinct trends based on the candidate's background and the entrance exam opted for:
Shift to PERA CET/SET: While many students previously relied on the MAH-B.Ed. CET, there is an increasing trend of students appearing for the PERA CET or the college's own Somaiya Entrance Test, as these results are processed faster for university-specific admissions.
Linguistic Minority Advantage: Candidates applying under the Gujarati Minority category often see a relaxation in the cut-off by 10–15 percentile compared to the Open category, making it a significant entry point for eligible students.
Stream-Specific Competition: Historically, the cut-off for the Science and Mathematics pedagogy is the most competitive, followed by English and Commerce. Social Science subjects generally have a slightly lower cut-off threshold.
Weightage Distribution: The final merit list is typically prepared with 50% weightage to the entrance exam score and 50% weightage to the undergraduate academic performance and interview score.
Application Process: Prospective students must register on the Somaiya Vidyavihar University admission portal (admissions.somaiya.edu). A separate application fee is applicable.
Counseling Rounds: The college conducts multiple rounds of counseling. If seats remain vacant after the first two merit lists, a "Spot Admission" or "Against Vacancy" round is conducted based on a first-come, first-served merit basis.
Documents Required: At the time of admission, candidates must produce original mark sheets (10th, 12th, and Graduation), Entrance Scorecard, Domicile Certificate, and for minority candidates, an affidavit proving Gujarati Linguistic Minority status.
For the most accurate and updated rank lists for the 2026-27 session, candidates are encouraged to check the university's official notification page or contact the KJSCE admission office at admissions@somaiya.edu.
