The Reserve Bank of India, in cooperation with the Government of India, founded the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) in 1969 as an autonomous apex organization for research, training, education, and consulting in bank management. Its purpose is to operate as the financial system's "think-tank" in a proactive capacity.
As an independent academic institution, NIBM is run by a Board, which serves as its highest policy-making body. The Institute conducts research (on policy and operations), trains and educates senior bank executives, and offers consulting assistance to the banking and financial industries. NIBM is well-equipped to teach executives to operate in a multi-cultural and multi-national environment because it is an advanced learning institution.
Another important aspect of the Institute is its Post-Graduate Programme in Banking and Finance (PGPBF), which was offered by NIBM and started in 2003–2004 to train managers of the next generation for the banking and financial services sector.
After being recognized by AICTE, the PGPBF has been renamed as Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (Banking & Financial Services) - PGDM (B&FS) as of 2013.
The vision of NIBM is to give the Indian banking sector a new direction and make it a more affordable tool for fostering national development. It follows that the Institute's mission is to support managers in their efforts to make their firms competitive in both domestic and global markets.

The library is well-equipped in areas including economics, general management, leadership, behavioural sciences, quantitative methods, sociology, agriculture, rural development, microfinance, etc. despite being primarily designed to serve the demands of the banking and financial sector.
Computer Lab- The well-equipped computer services centre, which offers exceptional IT services to consumers, is another focus point of the institute. The Center has cutting-edge computing resources to assist the Institute's research, training, and consulting activities. There are currently two computer laboratories with Intel-i5/i3 desktops, projectors, and audio systems. These labs are heavily used throughout the hands-on and demonstration portions of the training programs. Both the lab computers are facilitated with Internet connectivity.
Medical Facility- All participants, students, instructors, staff, and family members have access to medical services on the site. One resident medical officer and one medical consultant are present.
