Sibsagar College, formerly a prominent autonomous degree college in Joysagar, Assam, has transitioned into a university. In December 2023, the government of Assam enacted the Sibsagar University Act, 2023, which officially upgraded the existing Sibsagar College (Autonomous) into Sibsagar University.

Status and Recognition

  • Current Status: As of 2026, it operates as a State University. All assets, liabilities, and academic operations of the former Sibsagar College have been transferred to the new university.

  • Historical Standing: Founded in 1947, the institution was long recognized as a premier NAAC 'A' Grade autonomous college and a UGC "College with Potential for Excellence." These accolades established its reputation as a leading higher education hub in the region prior to its elevation to university status.

  • Affiliation: Previously affiliated with Dibrugarh University, it now functions as an independent university, responsible for its own academic, research, and administrative functions, including the provision of Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) programs.
