The FMGE was introduced in 2002 by the Medical Council of India (MCI), now known as the National Medical Commission (NMC). The primary goal of this examination is to ensure that foreign medical graduates possess the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective medical care within the Indian healthcare system.
The National Board of Examinations (NBE) is responsible for conducting the FMGE. Established in 1975, NBE is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, which oversees various examinations for medical education.
The FMGE is conducted twice a year, typically in- June and December. To be eligible for the FMGE, candidates must meet the necessary requirements-
Candidates must be either an Indian citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Applicants should hold a primary medical qualification that is recognized as equivalent to an MBBS degree in India. This qualification must be approved by the Indian Embassy in the country where it was obtained.
Individuals who have already attempted the FMGE three times are not eligible to apply again. Graduates from specific countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) with recognized postgraduate degrees are exempt from taking the FMGE.
