Engineers with MBA have more advantage in career

HYDERABAD: An additional degree in management can provide the required platform for engineering students to diversify into different streams and boost their job opportunities.
At the same time, students need to keep in mind that they need to acquire various skills other than their core knowledge skills.

The budding engineers of the CMR Group of Institutions got this message from the industry experts at a seminar on “Opportunities in Management”, organised by The Hindu Education Plus in association with Siva Sivani Institute of Management here on Tuesday.

Throwing light on the expanding opportunities, K.S. Susinder, Assistant General Manager, Corporate Communications, Infotech said that the telecom sector was the one to watch by youngsters looking for careers with a combination of engineering and management.

Emerging areas

He said that more than IT, emerging areas like retail, travel and hospitality will provide immense opportunities and students should gear up to grab them.

He reminded them that 25 per cent of the global workforce will be Indians by 2020 and the picture reveals the kind of opportunities one would have if they plan well.

Anurag Bajaj, former General Manager of Park Hotel, said that engineers played an important role in the hospitality industry.

In the hotel industry itself, 16 per cent of the expenses are related to engineering and IT department reflecting the role played by engineers.

A management degree pertaining to hospitality sector will further boost their growth.

Engineers with management are now into administration roles too and it only shows that they can diversify into various streams of work.

Various options

V.G. Chary, Director of Academics, Siva Sivani Institute of Management explained the various options available in the management programmes and what suits whom.

Explaining the difference between a PG Diploma in Management (PGDM) and an MBA programme, he said MBAs were offered by colleges affiliated to a university while PGDMs were offered by independent business schools.

Independent B-schools

He was of the view that independent business schools have the liberty to restructure their syllabi according to the industry needs and thus they are more relevant.

Replying to queries from students, he said that it was better to study a management course right after finishing engineering as they are still in the mood to learn. “Once you start earning, it's a bit difficult to come back to college due to various factors,” he said. The CMRIT Principal Janga Reddy was present.
