Faculty crisis at Osmania University

Currently, the university has over 400 posts which are lying vacant. A chunk of teachers retired from their services over the last two years. This year alone, 58 teachers retired. The figure of retired teachers may reach about 150 over the next two years or so. The university has 1,230 sanctioned posts. Upon rationalization, the number came down to 1,024. Of the total posts, the university is running with just 684 teachers.

With no sight of permanent recruitment, the university is looking for academic consultants for teaching in the varsity. Currently 443 academic consultants are taking classes. “Unless the university gets a regular Vice-Chancellor, recruitment cannot happen,” said Prof. K Pratap Reddy, registrar, OU. A senior official of OU said that the proposal for recruitment was given by the united Andhra Pradesh government. “Post bifurcation of the State, the government did not ask for any proposal,” an official said.

An official of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education said that the university’s financial situation has been not up to the mark. “The university is not in position to pay salaries for teachers who are working now. How can they pay for new recruits? The recruitment will not happen soon,” an official quipped.

With dearth of permanent faculty members, several departments have already lost their Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS). For a department to be selected for CAS, it should have a minimum of six permanent faculty members as a prerequisite. The psychology department which has been working with only two faculty members had already lost its centre. A few other departments like linguistics are on the verge of losing the tag.

“Two professors will retire by March and the department will be understaffed. If recruitment does not happen in time, it will lose CAS,” a senior professor said. The last recruitment drive was held in June this year and about 170 teachers were recruited in the process. However several posts in linguistic, chemistry, business management and Hindi departments got into a legal tangle over the selection procedure and allotment.

No full-time registrar too!
OU’s administration is already bumbling with no full-time Vice-Chancellor for the past three months. The situation just took a turn for the worse with no full time registrar. On Friday, in-charge Vice-Chancellor Vikas Raj appointed Prof E Suresh Kumar as the in-charge registrar of OU. Prof. Kumar is succeeding Prof. K Pratap Reddy whose term ended recently on Friday. Pratap was appointed in December 2013. Prof Kumar is currently heading Department of English, OU. He is also the Director of PG Colleges at Districts & Director, English Language Training Centre, OU.
