Grading system in SSC discriminatory

Only Upmarket Pvt Educational Institutions Benefit From The New System, Say Parents
Teachers, parents and student unions are opposing the grading system in the SSC examinations, results of which were announced recently, saying it is discriminatory and affects the academic future of the students.
While the teachers and parents believe this would cause a sense of insecurity among the students despite scoring good marks, academic experts assert the grading system would only help the upmarket private educational school managements to rake in the moolah by displaying the marks/grades of students.

Previously, the SSC board used to give first, second and third divisions to the students based on the marks they obtain in the exams. But this year onwards, the authorities have divided the marks into seven grades. For instance, a student who got 360 marks (which otherwise deserves a first class) is now bracketed under C1 (fifth) grade.

“Though the government’s move to fill the gap between the first and third class students by way of gradation is laudable, the brazen display of marks/grades by the elite private educational institutions would hit the morale of the students who get lower grades,” Pamulaparthi Namrata, assistant professor, Shatavahana University, Karimnagar, observed.

Student unions alleged that the state government and board officials were hand in glove with the school managements. “The school managements were warned by the government not to display the marks of top students. Yet, all of them went to town by releasing ads in print and electronic media. This was nothing but an effort to further their businesses,” alleged Vasudeva Reddy, Telangana students JAC leader.

The CBSE gives only grades to students and the marks are not revealed. But, the SSC board grading system clearly demarcates the marks and the grades. A1 grade indicates 550 and above marks, A2 is 449 and above, B1 rankholders are those who scored 448 and above marks, while B2 grade pertains to 397 and above marks. C1 grade students come under 346 and above marks ambit and C2 students under 295 marks.

“The D1 and D2 grade students are facing a severe identity crisis since their marks are also displayed. This is unhealthy,” Saritha, a school teacher at Hanamkonda, said. Parents are worried since the elite private institutions would take only “meritorious” students leaving no chance for even a C1 ranker to get admission though he is a first class student. “No one seems to bother about the future of the students. Everybody wants to fill the coffers,” charged Radhika, a resident of Girmajipet of Warangal. Her son got C1 grade.

While the parents and student unions are demanding that the government have a relook at the grading system, retired teachers want the SSC board to follow CBSE model. “If the government follows a system which is mutually beneficial to all the stakeholders, then it would be doing a world of good to the students,” opined B Venkateshwarlu, a retired government school teacher.
