‘Looking east’ seems to be the mantra for the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad. As part of the existing collaboration between the Government of India and Japan, a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency visited the institute for finalising layouts for eco-friendly ‘green’ structures to be built at the new IIT-H campus at Kandi village in Sangareddy district. The delegation was headed by professor Ohno Hidetoshi of the department of Socio-cultural Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, University of Tokyo. The three-year-old IIT-H presently operates from its temporary premises at Yeddumailaram. The new campus, likely to be completed by July 2013, will house six ‘iconic buildings’ designed by Japanese architects. “The buildings have been designed by the six-member team from Japan. After finalisation of the layout, we plan to collaborate with architects in the city who will execute the plan,” said IIT-H director, professor Uday B Desai. The proposed structures will house the guest house, sports and cultural complex. Remaining four structures will be completed later and will house the convention centre, library, incubation and research park for encouraging student entrepreneurs and an auditorium. The buildings will be designed keeping in mind the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment guidelines for constructing green buildings. “The architects have planned the structures for efficient use of energy and solar panels will power a part of the energy needs.
