Look beyond MBBS instead of wasting one more year: expert

VIJAYAWADA: Speakers at The Hindu Education Plus Eamcet Career Counselling programme advised students to look beyond MBBS and choose a course related to biological sciences instead of wasting another year by reappearing for entrance test to enter medicine course.

The observation was made in the wake of many students trying their second and third chance at the Eamcet just for the sake of getting an admission into the MBBS. During the interaction, at the Tummalapalli Kshetrayya Kalakshetram the subject experts clarified doubts asked by students and parents on the opportunities and admission procedures relating to MBBS, BDS, pharmacy, veterinary science, biotechnology and other agriculture courses.

Registrar of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences T. Venugopala Rao clarified that those wanting to enter medical profession should develop a strong sense of service attitude round-the-clock working habit besides understanding the need for making learning a life-long passion. He said it was not advisable for student to stop taking admission into BDS or pharmacy solely for the sake of an MBBS seat next time. The other resource persons, who responded to queries, were ANU Biotechnology professor K.R. Sambasiva Rao, Chalapathi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences Principal Nadendla Rama Rao and principal of Dr. Sudha and Nageswara Rao Siddhartha Institute of Dental Sciences M.V. Ramoji Rao. The students were told that there would be separate counselling programmes for MBBS, BDS and veterinary science courses with separate notifications to be issued based on Eamcet ranks. There were 4,800 MBBS seats while only 3,800 seats would be filled based on Eamcet ranks. It is proposed to increase the number of MBBS seats this year but no information is available on its status as of now.

Merit list

For filling management quota seats, there will be no area wise restrictions but colleges would have to prepare a merit list as per intermediate marks and put it on website and notice board before filling up the seats. The MBBS had wide opportunities as one can pick any of 26 specialties at the PG level and also there are super specialties. Fifty per cent seats in pharmacy courses were reserved for BiPC students and given admissions through separate counselling. Dental science had good chances due to dearth of professionals and presently 80 per cent of students were girls. Dental course was most suitable for girls as it had flexible timings, Dr. Ramoji Rao said.
