Revised UG Courses to have Telangana flavour

Students pursuing undergraduate courses in the state no longer have to skim through the textbooks that live in the ?past? and remain distant from the topical issues as a major revamp of the curricula is underway. In all likelihood, these changes will come into effect next academic year 2015-16.

The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) is all set to tweak the curricula of social sciences and languages that have been pending for over four years now. The proposed change is aimed at giving a contemporary look to the content.

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, the syllabus has to be revised every four years. However, the same syllabus of History has remained the same since 2007; while Commerce and Public Administration have seen no revision since 2008. The same is the case with other subjects. The intention of the state government is to incorporate the Telangana-related content in these textbooks. Revision is meant for this.

The significant part of the proposed changes is to help students receive ?good? foundation for those who wish to appear for civil services, groups and other state or national-level competitive examinations at the end of their graduation, said TSCHE vice-chairman S Mallesh.

?Enough focus will be laid on incorporating Telangana history, culture, polity and more importantly Telangana statehood struggle. But even content relating to AP will be retained as part of national content,? he explained.

Committees have been set up to work out these changes. Osmania University has been assigned to head the committee working on History and Commerce.

While Telugu University has been made head of the committee set up for revision of Public Administration, the BR Ambedkar Open University is looking into changes relating to Anthropology and Sociology. A committee on Telugu language subject is yet to be formed.

Each committee has a dean, head of the department and other faculty members from the university as primary members. Other members, secondary members of the committee, are drawn from other universities. After two rounds of discussions, the committees will finalize the syllabus before sending it to the Collegiate Education for its approval and printing.
