State okays 500 More Medical Seats

With 500 extra MBBS seats sanctioned for the 10 government medical colleges across the state (50 seats for each college) the medical and health department at last issued orders sanctioning additional infrastructural facilities needed for the enhancement of MBBS seats in the government medical colleges including Osmania Medical College.

The government has sanctioned `79.63 crore for renovation of existing facilities and construction of additional hostel blocks. The decision is a step forward to meet the requirements of the Medical Council of India. The Centre has also allocated `69.73 crore for enhancing the facilities and strengthening medical education in the state.

Recently, the MCI had inspected the OMC and pointed out certain deficiencies in connection with the 50 extra MBBS seats. The government will constitute a committee to review the proposals and come up with suggestions for strengthening facilities of all teaching hospitals.

The panel shall comprise the MD of AP Medical Services Infrastructure & Development Corporation (APMSIDC) as chairperson, director of Medical Education and chief engineer of APMSIDC as members.
