State students crash GATE

Andhra Pradesh emerged topper with maximum candidates from the State clearing the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this year. The results, declared on Friday, are available on the official website 'www.gate.iitb.ac.in/gate2013/'.

From among the 1.8 lakh expected candidates from the State, 22,746 were declared qualified, followed by Uttar Pradesh (22,400), Maharashtra (9,951), Bihar (9,820), and Kerala (8,992). Chakradhar Reddy secured 6{+t}{+h}rank in the Electrical Engineering stream, while Parth Lathigara secured 10{+t}{+h}rank in ECE stream.

Rohit Ronge, originally from Pune, but appeared in the exam from the city, secured first rank in Instrumentation Engineering, said Aditya Reddy of Gateforum Institute.

Nearly 81 per cent of the candidates who appeared for GATE-2013 were from Electronics and Communication Engineering (2,56,135), Computer Science and Information Technology (2,24,160), Mechanical Engineering (1,65,814) and Electrical Engineering (1,52,381) streams. Out of the 9,84,855 candidates, 1,36,699 have qualified which is 13.88 per cent.

Among the qualified candidates, 72,125 belong to general category, 41,237 to OBC-NC, 18,936 to SC, and 4,401 to ST category. Physically-challenged candidates comprise a total of 1,136 among the qualified in various categories. Women form 20.9 per cent of the total qualified candidates. Mr. Reddy said that very low pass percentage was noticed in Computer Science stream where only 7.78 per cent of students qualified Mr. Reddy said two scores were given this year calculated with the old and new formulae. The score with old formula will be valid till March 15, 2014 while the score with new formula is valid from March 2014 to 2015.
