Telangana Private Engineering colleges to collect fee at admission

Private engineering college managements have unanimously passed a resolution that the fee should be paid on the day of admission itself. The resolution was passed at the meeting of Telangana private engineering college managements and Financial Assistance for Students of Telangana (FAST) committee members: Vikas Raj, Principal Secretary, Higher Education; J Raymond Peter, Principal Secretary, Panchayat Raj, Rural Development and Rural Water Supply; Ajay Misra, Principal Secretary, General Administration Department; T Radha, Principal Secretary, Backward Classes Welfare; and Principal Secretary (FAC), Social Welfare, at Sankethika Vidya Bhavan here on 12th August.

A member of a private engineering college management said that students pay fee to universities at the time of admission, but it is not the same when they join private colleges. The college managements demanded that government should reimburse fee arrears of Rs 1,360 crore of 2013-2014 academic year by August 31. They said that government should follow previous norms while reimbursing fee arrears. Countering the demands put forward by managements, Ajay Misra said that the colleges should provide education but not run a business.

Refuting the comments of Misra, an engineering college management member said that varsities were making money through private engineering colleges. "JNTU convener is minting money by selling counselling data," he alleged the managements cried foul over the inspections in colleges. "A few months ago JNTU had completed its inspection in all the colleges. Whenever we raise arrears issue, the government is blackmailing us with an inspection," an engineering college management member lambasted. Private colleges made it clear that its government prerogative whether to continue with fee reimbursement scheme or come up with new guidelines but the government has to reimburse fee arrears and later take up admission process.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Telangana Private Engineering and Management College Managements Association president Goutham Rao said that officials assured that they would take up arrears issue with the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. "The officials said once the FAST guidelines are out, they would have another round of talks with committee members," he added. He stated that engineering colleges would cooperate with the government for completing counselling process by August 31, as per the Supreme Court's directive. Speaking to Young Hans, an engineering college management said, "All these days we did not pressurise the government as it was new. Now that it has completed two months in office, the government has to clear the air on arrears. If government fails to do so, we would not hesitate to knock the doors of the High Court."
