Telugu must in SSC

Students from other states or countries who want to appear for the SSC public exams in March 2014 in Andhra Pradesh will have to opt for Telugu as their first or second language. No relaxation will be made in this regard. The rule applies to students of all schools irrespective of their medium of instruction including those offering CBSE, ICSE or any other curriculum. The state government has decided to implement the “three-language formula” strictly and has asked the SSC Board not to give relaxation to students from other states or countries.

The SSC Board’s latest directive on “compulsory Telugu” for SSC exams is based on orders issued by the government in January 2013 following the World Telugu Conference held in December 2012. The orders made Telugu compulsory for all students from Classes I to X in all schools irrespective of medium of instruction.

“Students have to appear for SSC exams compulsorily with Telugu as either a first or second language duly following the three-language formula of the state government. Otherwise the candidates will not be allowed to sit for the SSC exams in March 2014,” said B. Manmadha Reddy, director of Government Exams. Students of CBSE, ICSE and international schools are now worried over the developments as several students shift to the state syllabus at the SSC and Intermediate level, and it would be difficult for them to clear their SSC exams with the “compulsory Telugu” rule. Reddy added that these students would have to pay special fees of Rs 650 to appear for the exams. They would also have to seek the prior permission of the SSC Board through their respective District Education Officers by October 11.
