Thousand Ph.D. proposals for a few hundred vacancies in OU

Admission into Ph.D. programmes of Osmania University is giving sleepless nights to the administration as well as Department Heads with the response far exceeding the seats available in all departments.

On the last day of the submission of proposals by students in the respective departments on Monday, the response was overwhelming. Officials expect proposals to be in thousands while the available vacancies with the guides are in a few hundreds.

In the Ph.D. Eligibility Exam, 2011, conducted in February this year, 12,032 candidates were declared eligible out of the 12,544 who appeared in 57 subjects.

Craze for Ph.D.

The numbers reflect the craze, and perhaps also the diluted assessment of the aspirants. A senior professor of the varsity says that the administration had decided to buy peace with the students by giving eligibility to almost everyone, rather than inviting their wrath.

The administration, of course, has a reason. In the 2010 eligibility test, conducted for the first time after the UGC made it mandatory, only 1,626 were declared eligible out of the 6,801 aspirants in 42 subjects. This had led to violence with students even burning the examination office partially alleging that it was a ploy to drive away students from the campus as they were active in the Telangana agitation.

In fact, most JAC leaders failed to clear the exam. Under pressure, the administration lowered the eligibility marks ensuring that almost everyone was eligible for the interview.

The pressure continued during admissions too, and a record number of about 1,500 Ph.D. admissions were given. “In some departments, the admissions crossed even 100, which is more than even the MA admissions of those departments. As per rules, one professor can guide six Ph.D. students at a time and most of these vacancies were filled by force,” an official agreed. “Quality of research is a big question and a concern now,” he says.

For a variety of reasons, craze for Ph.D. admissions has increased considerably in the university.

While many find it a safe bet of five years of hostel stay and fellowships, others seek it with Ph.D. becoming necessary for teaching posts in universities. Establishment of new universities and filling up of vacancies in the existing varsities has further fuelled the craze.
