CAT 2025 Preparation Tips

 CAT 2026 - Preparation Tips

  • Preparing for CAT 2026 effectively requires a structured, multi-phase approach. Since the exam is a test of strategy, decision-making, and accuracy rather than just rote learning, your preparation should focus on building systems rather than just finishing the syllabus.

The Core Strategy: A Phase-Wise Approach

Instead of rushing through all topics, divide your preparation into manageable cycles:

    • Foundation Phase (Now – 3 months): Focus entirely on conceptual clarity. For Quant, master Arithmetic (Percentages, Ratios, Averages), which forms the backbone of the section. For VARC, build a daily reading habit (30–45 mins). For DILR, solve basic, untimed puzzles (arrangements, tables) to learn "how to think" about data.
    • Strengthening Phase (3–6 months): Introduce "speed" and "stamina." Start taking Sectional Tests (40 minutes). In DILR, focus on set selection—learning to identify and discard difficult sets quickly.
    • Simulation Phase (Final 4 months): Shift focus to Full-Length Mock Tests.
      • The 3-Minute Rule: If you haven’t cracked the logic of a question in 60 seconds or can't solve it in 3 minutes, move on. Your ego is your biggest score-killer.
      • The Analysis: The analysis of a mock test is more important than taking it. Spend 2–3 hours analyzing every 2-hour mock to understand why you made mistakes.

    Essential Habits for 99+ Percentile

    • The Mock Routine: Aim for at least 30–40 mocks before November. Schedule them at the same time as your potential exam slot to condition your brain for peak performance during that specific time of day.
    • Daily Routine: Consistency beats intensity. It is better to study 2 hours daily than 10 hours once a week.
    • Error Logging: Maintain a "Mistake Diary." Are your errors due to calculation slips, misreading the question ("not," "except"), or a conceptual gap? Track these to identify patterns.
    • Active Reading: Diversify your reading sources. Use platforms like Aeon Magazine, The Economist, or The Atlantic to get used to the abstract, formal tone typical of CAT RCs.

    What to Avoid

    • Starting New Topics Late: In the final 30–45 days, stop learning new things. Focus entirely on sharpening your existing strengths and managing your "strike zone."
    • Comparing Percentiles: Your mock percentile is a guide for self-improvement, not a social metric. Compare your performance only against your previous self.
    • Neglecting Sectional Cut-offs: Remember, CAT requires you to clear minimum cut-offs in all three sections. An incredible score in Quant will not compensate for a failure in VARC.
