UGC NET 2026 Exam Pattern

UGC NET 2026 (EXAM PATTERN)

The OMR-based approach was used to administer the UGC NET 2026 written exam. Candidates are recommended to study the entire exam pattern while preparing for the UGC NET exam.

Detailed Structure

Paper I – General Paper on Teaching & Research Aptitude

Compulsory for all candidates.
Designed to test teaching/research aptitude, reasoning ability, comprehension, and general awareness.
Syllabus divided into 10 units:

Teaching Aptitude
Research Aptitude
Comprehension
Communication
Mathematical Reasoning & Aptitude
Logical Reasoning
Data Interpretation
Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
People, Development & Environment
Higher Education System

Total: 50 MCQs × 2 marks each = 100 marks

Paper II – Subject Specific

Based on the candidate’s chosen subject (from 83 options).
Syllabus = Postgraduate level curriculum of the subject.
Covers core concepts, theories, applications, and recent trends.

Total: 100 MCQs × 2 marks each = 200 marks

Marking Scheme

+2 marks for every correct answer.
No negative marking.
No marks for unanswered questions.

Mode of Exam

Conducted in online (CBT) mode.
Exam consists of two shifts (Morning & Afternoon).
Candidates attempt both Paper I & Paper II in a single sitting (3 hours, no break)

Language of Question Paper

The exam is available in English and Hindi (except language subjects, which are in respective languages).

Nature of Questions

All questions are Objective Type (MCQs).
Each question has four options, with one correct answer

UGC NET Exam Pattern FAQs

Ques.1 What is the total duration of the exam?

Ans. The exam is of 3 hours (180 minutes). Both papers are held in one session without any break.

Ques.2 What is the format of the question papers?

Ans. Both papers contain only objective-type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Each question has four options, with only one correct answer.

Ques.3 Is there negative marking in the UGC NET exam?

Ans. No, there is no negative marking for incorrect answers in either paper.

Ques.4 In what languages is the paper available?

Ans. The exam is offered in English and Hindi (except for language-specific subjects).

Ques.5 Can I choose the order in which to attempt the papers?

Ans. Both papers are presented together. Candidates can switch between Paper 1 and Paper 2 sections during the 3-hour duration.
