Since its inception in 1952, Government College Bilaspur has been living up to its motto “TAMSO MAA JYOTIRGMYA”, dispelling the darkness through education and, thus, proudly maintaining its reputation as one of the oldest and prestigious colleges of Himachal Pradesh. Nestled below the imposing Bandla hills overlooking majestic Govind Sagar lake, the sprawling clean green campus provides ideal ambience for scholarly and creative pursuits. Located in the district headquarter, the college is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University and is dedicated to educate and empower the people of this hilly state. The college has successfully undergone three cycles of assessment by NAAC and stands high with grade B .

With an aim to provide a healthy and intellectually stimulating environment for the learners, the college strives to help students in exploring myriad possibilities, harness their inherent potential and become the true torchbearers of humanity. The institution offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce and Vocational streams. Under the self-financing scheme, the college is running Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) and B.Sc. in Biotechnology. Catering to the needs of a developing nation the college also offers courses like BBA, B.Voc and BTTM to equip the students with soft skills and global competencies. In addition, the institution is also providing distant education through IGNOU study centre. The college possesses state of the art infrastructure in terms of smart classrooms, well equipped spacious labs, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, automated library with INFLIBNET facility and a convenient access to diverse print and electronic sources. Hostel facilities for students and residential quarters for its teaching and non-teaching members are added features of the college.

Regular activities of NCC, NSS and Rover & Rangers, Eco Club, Road Safety Club, Gender Equity Cell, Literary Club, Prahari Club and Red Ribbon Club enhance the vibrancy of the institution. The college hosts workshops, seminars, inter-college sports and cultural events to provide various opportunities to students for polishing their talent and skills in different fields.
