2,000 teachers face criminal charges

Nearly 2,000 government teachers who had secured promotions by submitting fake educational certificates in 2008 and another 200 who had claimed medical reimbursement by submitting fake bills in 2010 will face criminal charges.

District education officers have started filing criminal cases against these teachers based on the directions of the state government. Fearing prosecution and imprisonment, the teachers are now approaching advocates to secure bail.

The Commissionerate and Directorate of School Education had issued orders to DEOs to file criminal cases against these teachers following orders by the Upa Lokayukta in February this year.Though these irregularities had come to light five years ago, the government had failed to act due to a strong lobby of teachers’ unions.

However, the Upa Lokayukta’s directions have now forced the department to act against these teachers. Hundreds of teachers in Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam and Srikakulam were promoted by former DEOs in violation of all the 42 points in a checklist circulated by the department of school education.

The teachers had submitted fake certificates pertaining to MA (English) and B.Ed courses secured from private and deemed universities in other states to get promoted as school assistants from secondary grade teachers. In these five districts alone, 500 to 600 teachers were promoted without their original certificates being verified. Several genuine teachers who could not get promotions due to these irregularities had then approached the Lokayukta. In the other case, around 200 teachers had defrauded Rs 2 crore by submitting fake medical bills in Adilabad, Khammam, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, Vizianagaram and Warangal.
