B.Ed. graduates ineligible for SGT

About 7 lakh affected, they have to compete for 2,000 school assistant posts.About seven lakh B.Ed graduates in the state are in a fix with the state government declaring them ineligible to compete for secondary grade teacher (SGT) posts in its ensuing DSC teacher recruitment exam. SGTs teach students up to Class VII.

The B.Ed graduates say the degree has become a curse for them with the government’s decision, despite it being the higher professional qualification in teacher education. The government says only those with a Diploma in Education (D.Ed) qualification are eligible for SGT posts. It says B.Ed graduates are eligible to compete for only School Assistant (SA) posts, to teach students from Class VIII to X.

Angry B.Ed graduates point out that those with lower educational qualification like D.Ed were beinggiven preference for teacher’s posts over those holding a higher educational qualification like B.Ed. As if this was not enough, the government has decided to fill 70 per cent of the 9,000 SA vacancies by giving promotions to existing SGTs, leaving seven lakh B.Ed students to compete for just 2,000 SA posts.

“This is gross injustice for B.Ed graduates. While there are only 50,000 D.Ed graduates in the state, there are about seven lakh B.Ed graduates. The government’s decision has left seven lakh B.Ed graduates to compete for 2,000 SA posts, while 7,000 vacancies are available for 50,000 D.Ed students,” said Mr T. Ravi Shankar, a B.Ed graduate. In question now is the rationale behind the government permitting hundreds of B.Ed colleges in the state if these graduates are not eligible for SGT posts. “The state has the highest number of B.Ed colleges in the country.Over 600 colleges have 65,000 seats. What is the point in producing so more B.Ed graduates if the government itself considers them ineligible for SGT posts?” questioned Ms K.Aparna, a B.Ed graduate. However, officials in the school education department maintain that the decision to bar B.Ed students from SGT posts was in keeping with the guidelines of the National Council for Teacher Education, the regulator of teacher education in the country.B.Ed graduates cry foul Only those with D.Ed qualification eligible for SGT posts B.Ed graduates to com pete for only School Assistant posts 70% SA vacancies to be filled by giving promo tions to existing SGTs
