CBSE to introduce new Uniform Assessment format for Class VI to IX

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to implement the uniform system assessment, examination and report card for students of Class VI to IX which is going to replace the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation scheme (CCE). This is going to be implemented from the academic sessions 207-2018. All the schools which are affiliated to CBSE will need to follow this format from 2017-18 academic sessions.

CBSE decided make changes because to boost the confidence of students and to make sure that they are well prepared with their studies for a smooth appearance in the class 10 board exams. The new system would gradually level up the learning assessment as the students step into higher classes.

There are 18,688 schools affiliated to the CBSE board most of which follow varying assessment and report card patterns. So the centre has decided to introduce uniform system of assessment and evaluation of students and remove any sort of disparity in the system that creates problems for students needing to migrate from one CBSE school to another.

CBSE Chariman RK Chaturvedi stated that to make students more confident about facing the Class 10 board examinations when they join the upper-primary stage in Class 6, we have decided to implement a uniform system of assessment, examination pattern and report cards

Things to know about CBSE's new format for assessing students of Class VI to IX:

1) Students from Class VI to VIII follow the new uniform assessment scheme from the academic sessions 2017-18 with a two semester system that will include half yearly and annual examinations.

2) For Class IX students the assessment, examination and report card patterns will be same as for the class X board students.

3) In every semester there will be two 10 mark tests or periodic assessments for class VI to VIII. The half yearly exam is for a total of 80 marks.

4) Schools need to follow NCERT syllabus in Upper primary classes.

5) For Class VI to VIII students study mathematics, science and social science along with three languages and one other subject.

6) In Class VI to VIII, the annual exams will be based on the syllabus of the second half of the year, along with a certain percentage of the half yearly syllabus.

i) For Class VI, 10% of the half yearly syllabus included in the annual exams,

ii) Class VII, 20% of the half yearly syllabus included in the annual exams,

iii) Class VIII 30% of the half yearly syllabus included in the annual exams

7) Grading will be carried out separately for scholastic (academic) and non-scholastic (co-curricular) activities.

8) Students of classes VI to VIII will graded on a three-point scale in the non-scholastic activities of Work Education, Art Education, and Health and Physical Education. The factors on which they will be graded are regularity, participation, output and teamwork. Students will also receive marks for submission of notebooks.

9) Report cards issued by all CBSE schools will need to carry both the logos of the school and the CBSE.

10) The new report card design for students of Class VI to VIII and for Class IX students can be checked in the official circular.

CCE pattern?

Previously the CCE pattern followed by CBSE is like 60% of the assessment was based on pen and paper examinations, while 40% of the student assessment was carried out by teachers in a continuous evaluation process throughout the year.

In the uniform assessment pattern being brought in by CBSE, 90% weightage will fall on pen and paper examinations.
