CLAT results still a mystery; GNLU promises them 'ASAP'

The wait for results for over 33,000 aspirants of the All India Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2014 just got longer. Even two days after the scheduled date for the declaration, the convener for this year's CLAT, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), has not been able to come up with a definitive date on which the results will be declared. Results for CLAT were supposed to be declared at 8 pm on May 31. The university authorities on 2nd June just had this to offer: "Fresh results would be declared ASAP".

CLAT, an all-India entrance examination, is conducted on a rotation basis by 14 national law universities. GNLU is the nodal university this year. No fewer than 33,491 candidates from across India had appeared for the exam to vie for 1,660 undergraduate seats and 491 postgraduate seats in LLB and LLM at 14 reputed national law schools.

Explaining the technical discrepancy, GNLU sent a note on 2nd June saying, "The only issue the secretariat found was that the barcode sticker affixed on the front page of OMR answer sheet and candidates' sticker affixed on the back page, in few cases, was mismatched. Any mismatch between the barcode and the candidate's sticker can cause the marks being reflected against a different roll number."

Bimal Patel, director, GNLU, added, "The revised results will be declared as soon as possible and we will ensure that any delay due to this reconciliation is reduced to the maximum extent possible." Meanwhile, anxious parents, CLAT mentors and students have bombarded the CLAT team at GNLU with letters and complaints. Some angry guardians who went to GNLU returned empty handed. "I was told some invigilators or students put wrong barcode and candidate stickers on their OMR sheets. How does that explain the drastic cut-off marks?" asked Santanu Bhattacharya, father of a CLAT candidate from Gujarat. Many students have taken to Twitter tagging and requesting Union human resource development minister Smriti Irani to help them out in this crisis.
