CUET UG 2024: CUET domain-specific subjects require focused preparation. But for those whose basic concepts are clear and whose analytical ability is good, this paper will be a cakewalk for them. For this, candidates should ensure that they are prepared and confident about at least the main topics.

When it comes to mathematics, as regards pattern, there will be one question paper which will contain two sections i.e. Section A and Section B (B1 and B2). Section A will have 15 questions covering both mathematics and applied mathematics which will be compulsory for all conditions. Section B1 will have 35 questions from mathematics and out of which 25 questions need to be attempted. Section B2 will have 35 questions purely from applied mathematics and out of which 25 questions need to be attempted.

Below is given syllabus of the Maths section along with tips to master the different units 

Unit I and Unit II include short and comparatively easy topics which don’t demand a lot of time. Therefore, try to prepare all at once and then just revise them through questions from mock papers.

Unit 1

• Relations and Functions
• Types of Relations
• One-One onto functions
• Composite functions and Inverse 
• Binary operations
• Inverse Trigonometric Functions
• Principal value branches; Domain and Range
• Properties of Inverse trigonometric functions

Unit 2

• Matrices and Determinants
• Properties of matrices and determinants and their applications.
• Area of triangle
• Adjoint and Inverse of matrix
• System of linear equations 

Unit 3 covers the most important topics and high weightage and it demands in-depth understanding of concepts and so much of practice. NCERT exercises are really good to set your foundation for these chapters and then one can practice it from other standard books. So, invest good amount of time and hard word on Unit III. 

Unit 3

1. Continuity and Differentiability

• Continuity (Questions based on finding constants given that f(x) is continuous)
• Derivatives of:

1. 1. Composite functions
   2. Chain rule
   3. Inverse trigonometric functions
   4. Implicit functions
   5. Exponential and logarithmic functions
   6. Parametric functions

• Logarithmic differentiation
• Rolle’s and Lagrange’s mean value theorem

Tip- Remember the formulae and the application of these  in specific situations.

2. Applications of Derivatives

• Rate of change
• Increasing and decreasing function 
• Tangents and Normals
• Approximation
• Maxima and Minima

Tip- These are application based topics hence the tip to master this part is to be aware of all question types

3. Integrals

• Methods of Integration

1. 1. Substitution method
   2. Partial fraction
   3. By parts

• Integrals of the type based on different formulae
• Definite Integral as limit of sum
• Properties of definite integrals and problems based on them (very important)

4. Application of Integrals

• Area under simple curves especially Lines, Circles, Parabolas, Ellipse (in standard form only)
• Area between the two curves.

Tips- It is a short and easy topic and its questions can be lengthy because of tedious calculations so memorise standard results and short tricks to get done with its questions in no time.

5. Differential Equations Order and degree

• Formation of Differential equations
• Methods to solve different equations of first order and first degree

1. 1. Variable separable
   2. Homogenous differential equations
   3. Linear differential equations

Tip- It is the easiest chapter of Unit 3 and students can always expect 2 to 3 questions from this topic. Therefore, do good practice of questions based on Order and Degree of Differential Equation and Methods of Differential Equations

Unit 4 is a scoring unit as it demands in depth understanding and visualization and it includes numerous formulas and results which one has to memorize after understanding of their derivatives to save time in the exam.

Unit 4

1. Vectors

• Types of vectors
• Addition of vectors
• Multiplication of a vector by a scalar
• Position vector of a point dividing a line segment in a given ratio
• Scalar (Dot) product
• Vector (Cross) product
• Projection of a vector on line

Tips- Practice more and more questions based on Scaler and Vector product and Projection of a Vector on a Line

2. Three-dimensional Geometry

• Direction cosines and Direction ratio
• Cartesian and Vector equation of line
• Coplanar and Skew lines
• Shortest distance between parallel lines 
• Angle between 2 lines, 2 planes and Line and a Plane
• Distance of a point from a plane

Unit 5 Paper includes at least 1 to 2 questions from this unit. Understand the terminologies given in NCERT

Unit 5 – Linear Programming

1. Understanding of terminologies such as

• Constraints
• Objective function
• Optimization
• Different types of linear programs 
• Feasible and Infeasible regions
• Optimal feasible solutions (up to three non-trivial constraints)

2. Mathematical formulation of LP problems and Graphical methods

Unit 6 is an important unit and questions can be asked from any of its topics therefore, all are important so invest good amount of time on this unit as well as practice questions from all its topics.

Unit VI – Probability

1. Multiplication theorem on probability
2. Conditional probability
3. Independent events
4. Baye’s theorem
5. Random variable and its probability distributions
6. Mean and Variance
7. Bernoulli trials and Binomial distribution

General preparation strategy to ace Mathematics

• Practice is the key to score very good marks in Mathematics.
• Analyse your syllabus and previous year papers, and try not to skip any of the topics mentioned above.
• Stick with one or two sources for content rather than multiple sources.
• Time is one essential issue for students especially in math paper so, practice maximum mock papers with time limit to improve accuracy in calculations and speed.
• Previous year questions and mock papers provide a window to upcoming questions and their proper analysis and practice gives an edge over the rest.
