Delay in JNTU V-Cs' appointment hits prospects of students

Pending issues include incorporation of JKC subjects into core curriculum of engineering stream

Delay in appointment of Vice-Chancellors to the three Jawaharlal Nehru Technological Universities in Hyderabad, Kakinada and Anantapur has hit the administration hard with key decisions pending even as engineering education has been crippled with the closure of colleges owing to general strike.

Among the major pending issues is the incorporation of Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKCs) subjects into the core curriculum, which is being demanded by the industry to make students more employable.

It came up for discussion in the recent meeting with NASSCOM officials where they debated over the delay in incorporating JKC courses in the engineering curriculum. Government officials apparently expressed their helplessness in taking a decision due to the absence of full-time VCs for the three JNTUs that constitute more than 90 per cent of the engineering students in the State.

A senior official explained that companies are now asking them to introduce their electives into the college curriculum so that students can gain employment easily. “It's a fact that not more than 25 per cent of our engineering students are getting placements due to various shortcomings. Integration of college curriculum and industry electives can plug some gap here but we need dynamic V-Cs to take it forward. Several other key decisions too have been held up with no V-Cs around,” the official lamented.

At the same time, deemed universities have gone ahead with integration of university curriculum and industry courses and began to introduce new courses. “New combination of courses will help students gain employment immediately after their B.Tech,” said the official. No wonder, many students are opting for deemed universities here and in Tamil Nadu.

Officials say the delay in adopting industry curriculum may force companies to head to deemed universities as they are sure of a pool trained for their needs. JKCs established by the A.P. Society for Knowledge Networks aim at equipping students, particularly those from rural background and vernacular medium with soft skills, English language skills and personality development that play an important role in shaping an industry-ready product.

JKC students are trained for certifications like IBM, Oracle and Microsoft and they also get opportunities to participate in campus recruitments. In fact, 1,402 candidates were recruited through JKCs in 2010-11 by IT and ITes companies and of these more than 800 were recruited by Infosys.
