IIT- Bombay to reach out to 'Learners' across India with interactive online courses

IIT Bombay (IIT-B) will offer interactive and bi-lingual online courses for learners, which includes students from institutes across the country, and training workshops for teachers.

The initiative will see training from an indigenous MOOCs or 'Massive Open Online Courses' platform, which has been developed on the open-edX, a non-profit initiative. The initiative is being termed 'IITBombayX' or extended online educational services from IIT Bombay.

MOOCs have become a rage globally in the field of higher education, with premier academic institutes making a beeline to offer them. The interactive mode of learning of MOOCs enable candidates from across the globe to access top-class education from premier global universities online and free of cost or at very low cost.

This recent initiative will kick off on Monday, January 26, 2015 with three courses. Students can avail the courses on http://www.iitbombayx.in and the first three programmes that are being offered include 'Introduction to Computer Programming', by Prof Deepak B Phatak and Prof Supratik Chakraborty from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, 'Thermodynamics' by Prof U N Gaitonde, Prof U V Bhandarkar and Prof M D Atrey from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and 'Signals and Systems' by Prof Vikram Gadre from the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The new server will be able to handle four to five lakh learners at the same time. Other than videos, problem sets, readings, etc., IITBombayX will also offer various interactive forums, such as, discussions, quizzes, instant feedback, etc.

The other IITs, among many other premier institutes in India, are also planning to launch more MOOCs in the coming days, backed by the government's Swayam Bharat program (Study Webs of Active-learning for Young Aspiring Minds). Industry experts said that the budget of Rs 100 crore was earmarked for online education for MOOCs as well as virtual classrooms. MOOCs may contribute towards attaining the target of training 500 million people by the year 2022, say industry experts.
