Inter exam talks hit roadblock

Narasimhan had summoned Telangana education minister G Jagadish Reddy and Andhra Pradesh human resource development minister Ganta Srinivas Rao to discuss the contentious issue. Sources said that both the minister were firm on their stands on conducting separate and common examinations. According to sources, the Governor also sought to know why the TS government was insisting on separate examinations. He wanted to know which of the two governments competent authority to conduct the examination was. The TS minister said that so far the Board has been under the authority of Andhra Pradesh government.

However, according to the Section 75 of AP Re-Organisation Act, any institution listed in 10th Schedule belongs to that State into which geographical area it falls and if other state requires services from the institution it should be provided. Citing Section 75, the minister made it clear that BIE belongs to Telangana and it has the responsibility to conduct examinations. He said that the board would extend all its support for conducting examination in Andhra Pradesh.

According to the sources, the Governor, who heard the stand of both the ministers, urged them to discuss with their respective chief ministers and resolve the issue amicably at the earliest. Speaking to newspersons after meeting with Governor, Ganta claimed that meeting was successful. He said that final call would be taken after consulting Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and refused to divulge further information.

It may be noted that both the states are in a tussle over the conduct of Inter exams. The Telangana government has taken a firm stand that it would conduct separate examinations. AP government wants to conduct common examination for two states. The AP government is of the view that conducting separate examinations would play spoilsport for the students in the EAMCET, IIT-JEE and other national level entrance examinations. So far both the government has to stick to their stands. Experts say that conducting separate examination would not hamper students appearing for EAMCET or other examinations. They say that according to AP Re-organization Act, admissions in the institutions should be common admissions in the both states, however, it did not mention common examinations.
