MBA/MMS CET to go online this year

The state MBA/MMS CET will go online this year, just like most of the entrance exams for B-schools.

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has decided to take the plunge from the exam this March, considering most students are well-versed with online exams now.

But experts said students from the interiors of the state might be discouraged with the online mode of the exam.

The technical board decided to reintroduce MBA/MMS CET from this year. In 2013-14, admissions to B-schools in the state were done on the basis of the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT), conducted by the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

Now, it has been decided to go back to the CET as a high number of vacancies was reported in B-schools last year. Before 2013-14, admissions were based on the state CET alone.

"Aspirants are well-versed with computer-based exams by now," Dayanand Meshram, joint director of DTE, said. "Most of the important management entrance exams like CAT, and even CMAT, are conducted online. The state also had to adopt technology sooner or later. The schedule for the online exam is already released."

A faculty member from a B-school said that there was a possibility that CMAT saw low registrations from the state as it was an online exam. "Several aspirants coming from interior Maharashtra might be discouraged to take the exam if the entire process, including the exam, goes online," the faculty member said.

The registration process, which is also online, will commence from January 27. The entrance test will be conducted through online mode on March 15 and 16, according to the initial schedule of activities released by the DTE on January 21.

In 2013-14, the state admitted candidates on the basis of scores in CMAT, without group discussion and personal interviews, after abolishing the state-level admission test. The vacancy in B-schools then increased from 25% to 39% as several institutes complained that students, especially those from the rural areas, were finding it difficult to adjust with the CMAT syllabus which is comparatively tougher.

The admission to all management courses-MBA, MMS, PGDM and PGDBM-will be done by way of a centralized seat allotment process.

Details related to PGDM courses and institutes participating in the centralized admission process (CAP) will be released before the start of the option form submission stage.

The CAP will consist of total four rounds, out of which first three rounds shall be based on computerized allotment and the last round by counseling. Non-resident Indian (NRI) candidates are eligible to apply for institute level seats in private unaided institutes.
