NCTE Proposes to Make B.Ed. a Two-year Course

Candidates who intend to take up teaching as a profession from the next academic year have to brace up for a package of proposed changes in teacher education. Measures are also on the anvil to contain mushrooming teacher training institutes to ensure that they adhere to strict norms.

As part of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) proposed changes, one of the change is to make B.Ed. course into a two-year programme, sources in the school education department said.

In its effort to bring in professionalism, the NCTE wants an aspiring teacher to receive a full five-year higher education before taking up formal teaching. This means, after three-years of graduation programme upcoming teachers would study two-year B.Ed. course as per the proposed change, the official explained.

“Changes would be brought even in the curriculum based on a pedagogy method called constructivism. Accordingly, students have to undergo a lot of practical exposure and experimentation which enables them to get hands-on experience before taking up teaching at schools,” he added.

Besides, to specially train teachers for elementary classes, a two-year diploma course is likely to be introduced starting next academic year. The eligibility is Class 12. However, the proposed changes are in the nascent stage.

Prior to this, the major changes to teacher education were made when the Education Policy was introduced in 1986. For over five years, now, there have been efforts at the national-level to tweak the pattern of the teacher education. However, it did not materialize.

To ensure that the teacher training institutes comply with the requisite infrastructure and academic standards, the NCTE wants to bring in a provision that the state government inspect the college before issuing a no-objection certificate. “Unless, the colleges procure NOC from authorities concerned the managements cannot run the college. The NOC is must,” he pointed out.
