State bags 55 ranks in Civils

HYDERABAD : A record number of candidates from Andhra Pradesh excelled in the Civil Services Examination-2011, the results of which were announced on Wednesday. As many as 55 candidates from the state have qualified for various services.

Ms Sweta Mohanty, daughter of the retired IAS officer, Dr P.K. Mohanty, and Mr R.V. Varun Kumar, topped from the state. They ranked second and third respectively at the all-India level and have been selected for the IAS.

Many of the selected candidates are children of civil servants. Other than state topper Ms Mohanty, there was Mr Krishna Bhaskar, who was ranked 90th rank and selected for the IPS. Mr Bhaskar is the son of the senior IAS officers, Mr V.Bhaskar, and Ms Lakshmi Parthasarathi.

Mr Abhishek Mohanty, who ranked 139, is the son of the retired IPS officer and former DGP, Mr A.K. Mohanty. Mr C.N. Deevan Reddy, ranked 496, is the son of senior IPS officer Mr C.N. Gopinath Reddy.

Except for the first rank secured by Chennai-based law graduate, Ms S.Divyadharshini, it was a show of excellence by AP students. As many as 17 students from AP figured in the top-100 list while 50 figured in the top-500.

Of the top-25 students who figured in the list from AP are R.C. Reddy IAS Study Circle students Mr Anirudh Shravan (13th), Mr P. Sunil Kumar (18th), Ms Korlapati Hepsiba, daughter of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation officer Mr Vijay Kumar (20th) and and Mr M.Kurma Rao (23rd). Mr Sunil Kumar's mother works as a cook in the government social welfare hostel in Kadapa.

An elated Ms Sweta Mohanty said though she was expecting a good rank, she had never thought she would top the exam. The state topper in the civil services exam, Sweta Mohanty said: “I wanted to become an IAS officer like my father since my school days. It had been my life-time ambition.

Though I tried hard, I could not get selected for IAS during my earlier two attempts though I got into IRS in the second attempt. I continued to aim for IAS and worked hard. I am happy that I could finally realise my dream of becoming an IAS officer.“ As congratulatory messages poured in, she said the achievement was the result of “tedious“ exercise and hard work of three years coupled with luck. She is a student of Brain Tree IAS training academy, Himayathnagar.

Ms Mohanty, 26, is a Computer Science and Information Technology graduate from JNTU, Hyderabad.

Her father, Mr P.K. Mohanty is presently the Mission Director, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Ms Mohanty had qualified for the IRS in her second attempt last year and is presently posted in Siliguri as an assistant commissioner in the Customs and Central Excise Department. She is married to an IAS Officer of the West Bengal Cadre.

Mr Varun Kumar, the third ranker and the topper among men, has done his BDS from Ragas Dental College in Chennai. This was his third attempt.

Mr Chakradhar Babu, who ranked 12th, had worked in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Satyam Computers. He is a graduate from JNTU, Hyderabad, and had earlier been selected for the IPS. This time he qualified for the IAS.

Ms Hepsiba did her graduation and postgraduation in Geography and chose Geography and Public Administration in Mains. Her father, a delighted Mr Vijay Kumar said, “I hope my daughter will be selected for the IAS as she is in top 20.“ Mr Krishna Bhaskar, who ranked 90th qualified for the Indian Police Service, is a product of the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, and has completed his B.Tech from IIT, Kharagpur in Electrical Engineering.

He has also completed his post-graduate diploma in Management from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.

Mr Vijay Datta (114th) is a probationer in the IndianCustoms and Central Excise Service and has qualified for the IAS. He is a postgraduate from Osmania University in Applied Electronics.

Mr Abhishek Mohanty (139th) has qualified for IPS. He studied at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and is a graduate from Vasavi College of Engineering. He took the examination after a brief stint at Oracle in Hyderabad.

His father Mr A. K. Mohanty IPS (Retd.), who was the former DGP and his brother Mr Avinash Mohanty IPS, who is currently SP in Chattisgarh, have been inspirations for him.

Mr Riyaz Iqbal, a Keralite settled in Hyderabad, qualified for the IPS in his very first attempt. He attended weekend classes at Brain Tree. Mr Andhra Vamshi, ranked 273rd, is a product of JNTU, Hyderabad, has also qualified for the IPS.

Mr C.N. Deevan Reddy, ranked 496th has qualified for the Group-A Services.

He is a graduate from MJ College, Hyderabad, and has also acquired a degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is the son of the senior IPS officer, Mr C.N. Gopinath Reddy.Ms A.Deepti Reddy (ranked 394th) is a graduate in Information Technology from MVSR Engineering College, Hyderabad. She too has qualified for the GroupA services.

Ms Spoorthy Reddy (ranked 333) from Nalgonda has qualified for the GroupA service in her first attempt. She is a graduate of Shri Venkateshwara College, New Delhi, and a postgraduate from the Delhi School of Economics.

Ms S.R. Udayasri (ranked 487), a graduate in Civil Engineering, qualifies for the Group-A Services.

Others who have qualified were Mr P. Suneel Kumar (18th), Mr Chandra Sekhar Sakhamuri (24th), Mr V.Jayachandra Bhanu Reddy (25th), Mr Mantri Govinda Rao (31th), Ms Swetha Teotia (52th), Mr P. Madhusudhan Reddy (54th) and Mr Kankipati Rajesh (103th).“With over 45 candidates from Andhra Pradesh this is one of the best results that the state has ever had. Many candidates who have been working have passed the examination in their first attempts. About 30 students have qualified from our institute,“ said Mr Gopala Krishna, director of Brain Tree.

The top 25 candidates consist of 20 men and five women, 15 of whom are engineers; five from Commerce, Management, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences; and five are from a medical background.

Of the top 25, eight have made it to the merit list in their first attempt while four made it in their second attempt, nine in their third attempt, three in their fourth attempt and one in his fifth attempt.

Among those selected, 28 are physically challenged candidates while 14 are orthopaedic ally challenged, five are visually impaired and nine are hearing impaired. A total number of 5,47,698 candidates applied for this examination and 2,69,036 candidates appeared for the preliminary examination, which was conducted on May 23, 2010. Of them 12,491 candidates qualified for the main written examination held in OctoberNovember 2010 and 2,589 candidates were short-listed for the personality test conducted in March-April 2011. Among them 920 were selected.

They have been recommended for appointment including 428 general (including 19 physically challenged), 270 OBCs (including eight physically challenged candidates), 148 Scheduled Castes (including one physically challenged candidate) and 74 Scheduled Tribes candidates.

There are 151 vacancies in IAS, 35 vacancies in IFS and 150 in IPS.
