Telangana grading system for Intermediate students not up to the mark

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government’s decision to introduce grading system in the Intermediate exam appears to be at odds with the current set-up
Eamcet ranks are decided by giving a 25 per cent weightage to the Intermediate marks. This cannot be done clearly if only grades are given to students, as TS proposes to do.

Further, Intermediate weightage is used for rankings in the JEE Main by the Central Board of Secondary Education. If the TS Board of Intermediate Education awards just grades, the CBSE may not accept it. JEE Main gives 40 per cent weightage to Intermediate marks.

Besides, deemed universities use these marks to admit students. While that is so, the government has been considering scrapping Eamcet, arguing that there are more engineering seats than students though that is not the case in medicine.

Marks can still help colleges give admissions but not grades because numerous students would get the same grades.

TS Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari had announced on Friday that the government was considering awarding grades instead of marks, along with online evaluation based on the onscreen marking system.

Asked about these issues, Mr Srihari said, “The idea is still in the proposal stage. We have not taken a decision to do it. We are looking at all these aspects. It is meant to take the pressure off students.”

Dr P. Madhusudhan Reddy, president, Government Junior Lecturers Association, said, ?It is an absurd idea. Agreed you can scrap the 25 per cent weightage in Eamcet but what about JEE and deemed universities?

One idea could be to equate each grade with marks and use that for weightage. But that would put meritorious students at a loss.
