Mistakes galore in Inter evaluation, BIE suspends lecturer

Hyderabad: Inter evaluation is marred with errors this year also. The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has suspended one of its lecturers who had awarded 20 marks to a student instead of 89 in English examination. The error was found when the paper was reevaluated this month.

Even in 2010, several students had raised complaints against the board for conducting erroneous evaluation. Last year, a student who was awarded seven marks in one of the subjects was awarded 69 marks in reevaluation.

A total of 37,000 students had applied for reevaluation this year. Out of which 1,200 students were found to be given lower marks than they deserved. In about 20 cases the disparity between the marks awarded in the first evaluation and the second evaluation ranged from 20 to 65.

According to Board officials, the errors were mostly in English and arts subjects like History and Civics. “We have suspended the teacher to make it clear that such mistakes will not be pardoned,” said G Balaramaiah, BIE secretary.

Other students have also come up with objections against inter evaluation. In one case a student who was given 35 in Maths actually got 75 marks in reevaluation. In another case, a student who got 30 marks in History examination was later awarded 75 marks. In civics a student who got 20 marks got 45 marks later on, officials from BIE said.

Government Junior College Lecturers Association has called for changes in the evaluation pattern to reduce the number of errors.

"The shortage of evaluators is one of the reasons behind so many evaluation errors this time. The Board should make sure that lecturers attend the evaluation camp when assigned the job," said Madhusudan Reddy, secretary of the association. This year 30 per cent of lecturers did not turn up at the evaluation camps, he added.
