The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) does not employ its own teaching faculty in the traditional sense, as it is an apex regulatory and coordinating body rather than a teaching university. Instead, faculty members are employed by the individual Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) and Food Craft Institutes (FCIs) affiliated under its academic umbrella.
Because NCHMCT sets the standards for hospitality education, it mandates a strict, merit-based recruitment process for all affiliated institutes to ensure teaching quality.
NHTET Qualification: To be eligible to apply for teaching positions (Assistant Lecturer or Teaching Associate) at any NCHMCT-affiliated institute, candidates must pass the National Hospitality Teachers Eligibility Test (NHTET). This test is conducted periodically by NCHMCT to screen candidates for their teaching and research aptitude and core hospitality knowledge.
The Selection Process: Simply qualifying for the NHTET does not guarantee a job. Qualified candidates must subsequently apply to specific vacancies announced by individual IHMs and face a secondary selection process:
Skill Tests: Candidates must clear both a Practical Skill Test (covering core areas like Food Production, F&B Service, Housekeeping, and Front Office) and a Teaching Skill Test.
Weightage: Merit is determined by a combination of the NHTET score/Ph.D. status and performance in these specialized skill tests.
Academic Requirements: Applicants generally require a full-time Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Management/Hospitality Administration (with at least 55-60% marks) and relevant industry experience. A Master’s degree or a Ph.D. in a hospitality-related topic is often preferred or required for senior roles.
While NCHMCT does not staff the classrooms, it is deeply involved in maintaining faculty standards:
Faculty Development Programs (FDPs): The Council regularly organizes FDPs for existing faculty members across all affiliated IHMs. These programs focus on emerging hospitality trends, new technologies, and pedagogical innovations to keep educators aligned with current industry requirements.
