Put on websites fee structure, admission procedure: UGC to VCs

Coming to the aid of admission seekers, UGC has asked all vice chancellors to ensure institutes display on their websites the detailed fee structure and other expenses along with admission procedure and placement records.
The structure of the fee charged for each course along with other funds like institution development should be posted on the website, UGC said in a communication to the VCs coinciding with the admission season.

The move comes in the wake of spurt in complaints about institutes concealing information and misleading parents and their wards on tuition fee and other expenses. The development also comes against the backdrop of several advocacy groups demanding transparency in deciding fee structure by professional colleges and other institutes and also penalising institutes who fail to do so.

UGC desires that for the benefit of the students who seek admission in your esteemed university, colleges, it would be appropriate that all relevant information regarding your institution should be displayed on the website, it said.

UGC has also asked them to display the profile of teachers, research output of the institution and placement profile of the pass-outs of the institutes. Institutes have been asked to report back to UGC about the action taken in 15 days.

They have also been asked to provide information on the departments, which have been recognised as centres of excellence by funding agencies, and scholarships available. Details of students' grievance mechanism, research output and academic calender are some of the other points highlighted in the communication that has to be posted on the website.

All student-centric facilities available at institutions, especially hostels, transport, all relevant approval of statutory bodies and name of nodal officers for students facilitation services should also be provided on the website, it said. Last week, the HRD Ministry had also encouraged the students to visit the 'know your college' portal, a single source platform to get information on more than 10,500 colleges which conduct about 14,000 programmes in technical education.

The portal also covers 35,000 colleges conducting at least 20,000 programmes in non-technical education.
