IIT Roorkee Opens PhD Admissions For Spring 2026-27 Semester

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has commenced admissions for its PhD programmes for the Spring Semester of 2026-27, inviting candidates interested in pursuing advanced academic and research opportunities. The deadline for submitting applications is October 20, 2026, and eligible applicants are encouraged to apply through the official IIT Roorkee website. The academic classes for new PhD students are scheduled to begin on January 11, 2027. Additionally, candidates have the option to enroll in the Joint Doctoral Degree Programme, offering an enhanced research experience across institutions.

PhD Admission Requirements

The PhD admission requirements outline the Common Minimum Eligibility Criteria (CMEC) necessary for prospective candidates based on their educational background.

• Applicants are expected to hold a relevant Master's degree and must meet specific academic benchmarks. For candidates belonging to the General, GEN-EWS, and OBC categories, a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.0 on a 10-point scale, or an equivalent of 60% marks, is required. Conversely, those from SC, ST, and PwD categories need a minimum CGPA of 5.50 or 55% marks to be eligible.

• Additionally, all applicants must demonstrate successful completion of a national-level examination. Acceptable tests include GATE, CEED, JEST, and UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, which can either qualify for lectureship (Assistant Professorship) or exclusively for PhD admission. Alternatively, candidates may uphold a national-level fellowship that aligns with these requirements. Meeting these criteria is essential for applicants to be considered for admission into the PhD programs at the institution.

• Applicants of all categories (GEN/GEN-EWS/OBC/SC/ST/PwD) with a BTech degree or MSc and a CGPA of 8.0 or above from Ministry of Education-funded technical institutions are exempt from qualifying national-level tests like GATE/NET.

• Applicants with a four-year Bachelor's degree, a minimum CGPA of 7.50 or 75% marks, and qualification in national-level tests (e.g., GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, or equivalent) are eligible.

• Applicants with a Bachelor's or Master's degree from IITs and a CGPA of 8.0 or above are also exempt from qualifying national-level tests.

• September 21, 2026: Start of online application process
• October 20, 2026: Last date for filling out the application form
• November 16-21, 2026: Tentative dates for interview and/or written test 
• January 7-8, 2027: Date of academic registration by the candidate (in person)
• January 11, 2027: Commencement of classes.

Sakuntala Fellowship

The Sakuntala Fellowship, aimed at advancing knowledge and supporting talented female candidates, is open to those who hold a BTech, BE, BArch, or BDes degree from technical institutions funded by the Ministry of Education. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 8.5 on a 10-point scale. Notably, the requirement of GATE, CEED, or other national-level examinations is waived for applicants meeting these criteria.
