Dental PG Admission 2026 Cut-Off

Dental PG Admission 2026 Cut-Off Lowered By 20 Percentile Points Across Categories

New Delhi: In a major relief to thousands of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) aspirants across the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), in consultation with the National Dental Commission (NDC), has officially lowered the qualifying percentile for NEET MDS 2026 by 20.576 percentile points across all categories. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced significant revisions to the qualifying cut-off percentiles for the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programmes via the NEET-MDS 2026. The adjustments reflect a substantial reduction in the qualifying percentiles: from the previous 50 to 29.424 for General category (UR/EWS) candidates, from 45 to 24.424 for General Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and from 40 to 19.424 for candidates from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), including PwBD candidates within these categories.

This revision follows the declaration of the NEET-MDS 2026 results on June 2 and is in response to a letter dated October 12, 2026, from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The NBEMS noted that the minimum qualifying percentiles have been lowered by 20.576 percentile points across all categories, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Dental Council of India (DCI) Master of Dental Surgery Regulations, 2017, as well as the second proviso to Clause 7(1) of the DCI Master of Dental Surgery Course (First Amendment) Regulations, 2018.

The regulatory decision aims to prevent postgraduate seat vacancies across government, private, and deemed dental institutions for the 2026–27 academic session.

Category-Wise Revised Qualifying Percentiles

Following the reduction, the updated qualifying criteria for Dental PG admissions for 2026 are as follows:

Category Original Qualifying Percentile Revised Qualifying Percentile
General / EWS (Unreserved) 50th Percentile 29.424 percentile
UR - PwD 45th Percentile 24.424 percentile
SC / ST / OBC (including PwD) 40th Percentile 19.424 percentile

Rationale Behind the Decision

Every year, a considerable number of specialized Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) seats remain vacant due to high initial percentile cut-offs. The decision to slash the threshold by over 20 percentile points was taken under the regulatory provisions of the Dental Council of India (DCI) MDS Regulations:

  • Preventing Seat Wastage: Ensures optimal utilization of specialized clinical infrastructure and academic resources in dental colleges.

  • Expanding Eligibility Pool: Allows hundreds of candidates who fell short of the initial cutoff to participate in ongoing and subsequent counseling rounds.

What Happens Next for Candidates?

  1. Revised Merit List & Scorecards: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) is expected to publish the revised NEET MDS 2026 scorecards and rank lists reflecting the updated qualifying status.

  2. Fresh Counseling Schedule: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and respective state counseling authorities will issue fresh registration windows and revised counseling dates for upcoming rounds.

  3. Choice Filling: Newly qualified candidates can register on the official MCC portal mcc.nic.in and submit their preferred choices for clinical and non-clinical MDS specialties.
