HAMIRPUR / SHIMLA — In a major boost for healthcare trainees in the state, the Himachal Pradesh government has signaled its intent to hike the monthly stipend for MBBS interns. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed that the state administration is actively working on the proposal and will allocate dedicated funding in the upcoming budget to support the increase.
The announcement was made during an interactive session with medical students and faculty at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur, where the Chief Minister inaugurated a new academic block built at a cost of Rs.200 crore alongside a new Allied and Healthcare College.
Medical interns across government institutions complete a year of mandatory clinical rotatory internship before receiving their final practice licensing. Addressing long-standing demands for financial assistance, Chief Minister Sukhu assured students that the administration understands their contribution to the public health system.
"The government is actively considering an increase in the stipend for MBBS interns, and necessary budgetary allocations will be ensured to realize this move," the Chief Minister stated during his address.
While the revised monthly figures and exact date of implementation remain under review, official circulars from the Medical Education Department are expected following formal budgetary approval.
The proposed stipend hike is part of a broader overhaul aimed at modernizing medical infrastructure and training across Himachal Pradesh:
Allied & Healthcare College: The newly inaugurated facility in Hamirpur introduces 210 seats across key fields including Medical Lab Science, Radiology, Anesthesia, and Dialysis.
Advanced Medical Technologies: Plans are underway to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotic surgery training directly into medical curricula.
Campus Expansion: Construction is progressing on 300-bed separate hostels for male and female students, an modern amphitheater, and a comprehensive library.
Global Exposure Initiative: The state is finalizing a selection framework to send top-performing medical students on international exposure trips to learn modern healthcare practices abroad.
Future expansions planned for the Hamirpur medical complex include a specialized cancer hospital, a super-speciality block, a dental college, and a nursing institution.
